Medieval Chants And Improvisations

1999

Laurentius M. Schlieker, organ
Artis Gaga, saxophone
Guntars Pranis, conductor
Schola Cantorum Riga, ensemble

The aim of musicians participating in this record was not to play these beautiful chants as a historical museum value, but much more to enjoy common music-making while revealing the deep expression and beauty of this music. Like it was commonly practised in medieval times, Schola sings in mixed combination of high-pitched and low-pitched voices. According to the rules of medieval monasteries, it corresponds to the historical situation more than a performance of male voices only. Chants are liturgically accompanied by organ, joined by saxophone that adds to the meditative mood with its modern sound variations, on the one hand, and attempts to follow a somewhat unusual way of interpreting this centuries old music, on the other hand.
